Entertainment News and Views : OnTheBox.com Blog Chris Morris’ Four Lions is a funny, thrilling comedy that illuminates modern jihadism through the prism of farce. It understands jihadists as human beings. And it understands human beings as innately ridiculous. What This Is Spinal Tap did for heavy metal and Dr Strangelove the Cold War, Four Lions does for the modern face of terrorism. In a British city, four men have a secret plan. Omar (Riz Ahmed) is disillusioned about the treatment of muslims around the world and is determined to become a soldier. This is the most exciting idea Waj (Kayvan Novak) has ever heard. Better still it’s a no brainer because Omar does his thinking for him. Opposed to Omar and everyone else on earth is the white islamic convert Barry (Nigel Lindsay). He’d realize he joined the cell to channel his nihilism – If he had half the self knowledge of a duck. Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) is the odd man out. He can make a bomb – but he can’t blow himself up just now coz his sick dad has “started eating newspaper”. Instead he’s training crows to fly bombs through windows. This is what Omar has to deal with. They must strike a decisive blow on their own turf but can any of them strike a match without punching himself in the face? var s1 = new SWFObject('http://blog.onthebox.com/wp-content/plugins/videoplayer/player.swf','bannerswf','450','270','9','#ffffff'); s1.addParam("allowfullscreen","true"); s1.addParam("allowscriptaccess","always"); s1.addParam("wmode","opaque"); s1.addParam("flashvars","file=http://blog.onthebox.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/trailer_flv_med_480x272.flv&stretching=fill"); s1.write("videospace_trailer_flv_med_480x272"); Summit Search For Directors For Twilight: Breaking Dawn by Emily Moulder 17 Mar 2010 at 1:33pm The decision on whether or not to split the final book of the Twilight series in half is still up in the air, as is the decision on who will direct the movie. Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final installment which could well piggy-back on Harry Potter’s idea to split the last book in half. Summit Entertainment have been putting in a few calls to some Oscar winning directors in the hopes of bringing the films critical credibility. According to Entertainment Weekly, those in line are Milk’s director Gus Vant Sant, Marie Antoinette’s Sofia Coppola and Dreamgirls’ Bill Condon. The directors of the series so far have been mediocre, with only a handful of good films between the three of them, so maybe Summit are hoping some Oscar golddust will rub off on the series. Apparently, they’ll be closer to a decision after screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has finished a script outline to give to the potential directors. Do any of these directors sound like a good fit? Who would you like to see direct Breaking Dawn? House Of The Devil Review: Babysitting Satan by Nicola Young 17 Mar 2010 at 1:18pm THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL (18): On General Release Friday 19th March The House of the Devil is released in cinemas this weekend and if you’re particularly keen on living in pant-wetting fear of the strange, old couple living next door (pre-movie they were adorable), then this slick and really quite impressive horror movie might just be for you. Set in the early 1980s, the film tells the story of college student Samantha Hughes’ (played by Jocelin Donahue) unsuccessful attempt to get her hands on some much needed cash – by babysitting for some dodgy, old Satanists. (The poor lamb didn’t know all of the details before she embarked on such an obviously flawed plan). Suffice to say, they’re not the friendliest of folks to work for and what follows is as suspense-filled and maddeningly tense as it gets. But in a good way. Lingering camera work, a lot of eerie silence and the holding back of most of the gory stuff until the last few minutes will have you shaking on the edge of your seat/hiding behind the sofa. For me, screaming my lungs out at every move poor Sammy made seemed the most natural way to cope with the mounting tension. Apart from this, though, the gore is done very well – this is not your run-of-the-mill horror stuff. Creative filming techniques and camera work make it more a work of art to be admired than your standard blood and guts horror – although there’s no denying that there is blood a-plenty, if that’s what you’re after. If the only reason you’re even considering watching a horror movie is because your evil boyfriend/sadistic best friend/nasty editor has coerced you, then this is a plus point. In short, this is an intelligent film which showcases creative talent to be admired by even Legally Blonde loving ladies, such as myself. New Poster For The A-Team by Emily Moulder 17 Mar 2010 at 12:57pm We love it when a movie comes together. A crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team. Scarcely has there been a better premise for a TV show or movie than that, so it’s understandable that we’re gearing up for the remake of the classic 1983 show. The movie will star Bradley Cooper as Templeton “Faceman” Peck, Liam Neeson as John “Hannibal” Smith, Rampage Jackson as BA Baracus and Sharlto Copley as “Howling Mad” Murdoch. Remind yourself of the trailer and bask in some of the old ultra violence. Rose McGowan Joins Conan Cast by Emily Moulder 17 Mar 2010 at 10:40am Someone’s cast Rose McGowan and for once it’s not Robert Rodriguez! For a while it seemed that the only director that was interested in casting McGowan was her ex-boyfriend Rodriguez but now Marcus Nispel has seen her potential, according to Variety. After it was announced recently that the cast for Nispel’s Conan was starting to be fleshed out comes another addition. McGowan has been cast as an evil half-human, half-witch to star opposite Jason Momoa as Conan. No stranger to playing a witchy role, McGowan shot to stardom on the hit show Charmed but failed to make an impression on Hollywood after that. She is still tentatively attached to a movie based on another Conan character Red Sonja which is kinda of bizarre to have her playing these totally different characters from the same universe. Red Sonja’s been in trouble for a while after studio heads didn’t want McGowan for the role as she’s not a big enough name, but maybe Conan will change their minds. |
